Mathematics in context (Level 3 Core maths)

Curriculum intent – the knowledge, understanding, and skills that students will learn

The Core Maths course (Edexcel) is designed to support students in developing practical mathematical skills that apply to real-life contexts, bridging the gap between GCSE Mathematics and further study. This course emphasises real-world applications and decision-making in mathematics, preparing students for a variety of disciplines beyond traditional mathematics.

Core Maths builds on the foundations of GCSE Mathematics with a focus on problem-solving, financial mathematics, data analysis, and mathematical modelling. Students will learn to interpret, analyse, and communicate quantitative information effectively. Key topics include:

  • Financial Mathematics: Understanding interest rates, loans, investments, budgeting, and inflation.
  • Data Analysis: Developing skills in interpreting data, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Students will work with probability, risk assessment, and data visualisation techniques to draw conclusions from real-world datasets.
  • Mathematical Modelling: Applying mathematical methods to analyse, interpret, and solve problems in various real-world contexts.
  • Estimation and Fermi Estimation: Making educated approximations to solve problems where precise data may be unavailable, relevant to fields like physics, economics, and environmental studies.
  • Critical Analysis: Evaluating the reliability and validity of mathematical information and data in public documents and media.

Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to recognise connections between mathematical concepts and real-life applications, fostering skills that will benefit them in careers, further education, and informed citizenship.

Curriculum implementation – teaching, learning, and assessment strategies

The Edexcel Core Maths course uses continuous formative assessment to help students practise and deepen their understanding of core concepts, with cumulative assessments focusing on the practical applications of each topic. Lessons incorporate real-world problem scenarios, encouraging students to think critically about how mathematics applies to daily life, business, and society.

Assessment involves:

  • Problem-solving activities: Regular practice with real-world data sets, financial scenarios, and estimations to strengthen students’ abilities in mathematical decision-making.
  • Formative feedback: Frequent, informal assessments embedded in lessons to address misconceptions and adjust the pacing of instruction.
  • Mock exams and timed tasks: Exposure to exam-style questions that emphasise practical problem-solving under timed conditions, fostering students' readiness for their final assessments.

The course structure allows each topic to build on previous knowledge while focusing on practical skills, fostering a strong understanding of how mathematics can be used to interpret and solve real-world issues. Group discussions, calculator use, and collaborative projects are also integrated to help students practise communicating mathematical ideas effectively.

Curriculum impact – intended outcomes for students

Upon completing Core Maths, students will have gained confidence in using mathematical tools to tackle real-world problems. They will have developed critical thinking skills, enabling them to interpret data, evaluate risk, and apply mathematical concepts across various real-life contexts, including finance, healthcare, and environmental science.

Students will be able to:

  • Use mathematics to make informed decisions, particularly in personal finance, data analysis, and estimation.
  • Interpret and critically assess mathematical information in the media and public information, understanding its implications.
  • Apply mathematical methods logically and communicate findings effectively in real-world contexts.
  • Use calculators and technology to support calculations and data analysis effectively, bridging the gap between mathematical theory and practical application.

The Core Maths course equips students with a foundation of mathematical literacy that is applicable in a range of further education pathways and careers, particularly in fields that require analytical and quantitative skills.
