A Level Textiles
Curriculum overview for A Level Art and Design: Textiles
Curriculum intent
During their two years of study of Textiles, students will further develop their skills from Key Stage 4. They will complete a range of self-guided investigatory projects, showing their awareness of the intended audience or purpose of their textile design. They will continue to develop their manufacturing skills and demonstrate a more sophisticated relationship of form and function. Students will concentrate on the continuity and change in different styles, genres and traditions relevant to textile design, looking at their relation to social, environmental, cultural and/or ethical contexts, and to the time and place in which they were created. They will also develop a higher level of a working vocabulary and specialist terminology which is relevant to their chosen area of textile design, in turn, helping them to understand who they are as a young designer.
Curriculum implementation
During practical lessons, students will have the opportunity to explore a range of textile media, processes and techniques in specialist rooms. They will explore the use of drawing and work in a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales, continuing to work in sketchbooks and independently exploring relevant sources of inspiration from primary visits and secondary sources. Students' responses will be demonstrated through practical and critical activities that demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. As in Key Stage 4, they will cover the same four assessment objectives: develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding; explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops; record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress; and present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
Curriculum impact
Students will complete two units during the A Level Textiles course. Each unit will give students confidence in demonstrating their ability to critically understand sources. They will learn how to develop and refine ideas, record observations, reflect critically on practical work, as well as make meaningful connections between visual and written elements. Students will become informed risk takers, creative practitioners with the skills of high quality 3D manufacturing and sophisticated use of decorative techniques. By the end of the course, students will independently be able to realise their designs and develop their own design style in the textile area of their choice.
