Why study this subject:
The Law BTEC Level 3 course provides opportunities for students to develop many of the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers, such as the ability to learn independently; to research actively and methodically; to prepare and give presentations; work effectively in groups; read legal texts; write effectively; develop analytical skills and personal creative development.
Units:
Unit 1: Dispute solving in Civil Law - exploring how civil disputes are resolved, both in the courts and by alternative means. Students examine the making and working of precedent and its application in the law of negligence.
Unit 2: Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System – researching how laws are made and interpreted; who advises and decides on the outcome of criminal cases and the punishments that can be imposed if laws are broken.
Unit 3: Applying the Law – examining the law related to specific crimes, including homicide and offences against property. Students explore the police procedures for dealing with such offences.
Unit 7: Aspects of Tort – exploring how the law of tort protects people and the enjoyment of their property. Students examine compensation for loss, damage and injury in aspects of negligence, nuisance and occupiers’ liability cases.
How will I be assessed:
Unit 1 and Unit 3: Assessed under supervised conditions. A case study is provided two weeks before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research.
Unit 2 and Unit 7: Internally assessed coursework.
Future course and possible careers:
The Law BTEC Level 3 qualification supports entry to most degree-level courses, as well as careers in the legal sector, working as a solicitor, a barrister, a legal executive, a legal secretary or in the courts services. This qualification is also useful for careers in the public sector; in local government, in the civil service, in public services, in teaching and in the police force.
