About Blackfen

Blackfen school is an 11-18 non-selective school in the London Borough of Bexley.

The school has 1350 students and around 330 of those are in our thriving mixed sixth form.

Our school motto is

“raising aspirations – releasing potential”

This continues to be a key focus for the school.

To us “raising aspirations – releasing potential” is not just about results.  We aim to develop our young people as citizens who readily take on responsibility.  As a school we know that we have a key role to play in this.  We want our young people to develop confidence and self- esteem through a variety of opportunities available to them.

Our core business is teaching and learning and, as we aspire to be outstanding, we know that our teaching and learning must reflect this aspiration.

The school has a hard working and strategic Governing Body.  In our 2011 Ofsted inspection, governance was graded as outstanding and the Governors continue to challenge and support the work which we do.  Alongside Governors' meetings we have a range of sub-committee meetings, a school improvement forum and training days involving Governors and the leadership team.

Blackfen School is organised into eight faculty areas, with each being home to one or more teaching subjects. On entry, students are placed into one of five communities in the school.

There is a strong commitment to provision for students with additional educational needs and we have a resource based on-site provision for students with a visual impairment or a speech and communication disorder.   Rightly, this is a highly regarded provision within the local area and beyond and we are proud of our overall inclusion provision.
