Raising aspirations - releasing potential

Music (Performance) BTEC

Music (Performance) BTEC

Extended Certificate

Exam board: Edexcel

Why study this subject:

Music is all around us each and every day - what we choose to listen to, what we listen to without realising it and what we create ourselves. This course is not just about being a pop star. It is an exciting subject that explores what goes on behind the scenes as well as preparing you for the stage. The music industry is a massively expanding domain.  Not only are there more opportunities for performers with TV talent shows, but the administrative, technical, educational and support roles available are becoming more recognised and more important.

We are running the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National in Music (Extended Certificate). This is equal to a full A Level in the time spent studying for it and its results with 4 units studied of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external.

The BTEC is specifically catered for students who perform popular music, rather than the Music A-Level that is aimed more at classical musicians. However, classical musicians who are interested in the music industry rather than analysis would also benefit from this course.

Units:

Year 12

Year 13

Unit 1: Ensemble Music Performance

Unit 2: Practical Music Theory and Harmony

Unit 1: Ensemble Music Performance

Unit 3: Professional Practice in the Music Industry

(both units externally assessed)

A further unit chosen based on the students interests and specialisms. See a music teacher for the potential options.

 How will I be assessed:

Students will study 4 units—2 are externally assessed by Pearson/Edexcel whilst the other two are

assessed internally.

Future course and possible careers:

The BTEC in music is a practical course that prepares students for work or for further study in Higher Education.  Students who study this course have progressed to careers in performance, education, retail music, arts administration, music therapy and music engineering, music marketing, music management amongst others.
