Computing has never been more important in the modern work environment than it is today. Our computing curriculum has been designed to teach students a wide range of skills that modern day employers look for in their employees.

Term 1

Internet/e-Safety & Leaflet Design

This unit of work teaches students the importance of internet and electronic safety. The unit will cover all modern threats from using popular social networking sites as well as using a phone safely.

The students will be taught a variety of software packages from Publisher, Photoshop and Fireworks.

Term 2

Robotics Project

This unit of work teaches students about the wide range of robots that they interact with on a daily basis.

Students will learn the very basic level of programming using programs such as Scratch and Kodu. They will create interactive animations, games and quizzes.

 

Term 3

History of Computers

This unit of work will explore the history of computers from what was capable during the early developments of computing to modern day computers and networks. This will teach students even more detail about modern hardware.

This unit will look into how programming has evolved from very basic instruments such as the abacus and to how this has had an effect on the very computers we use day to day.

Term 4

Introduction to Programming

This will unit will teach students even more programming going into more complex programming  instructions such as loops and counts. The students will use these new key algorithms to create games such as pong, flappy bird and catch the ball. The students will also have the opportunity to create their very own games.

Term 5

Superhero Databases (MS Access)

This unit of work will teach students how to store, manipulate and present data for a variety of audiences. They will achieve this by creating engaging databases for super heroes.

Term 6

Finances (5-a-day garden)

This unit of work will focus on more data storage, manipulation and presentation with the use of formula and functions. Students will create a healthy garden spreadsheet and use formula, functions, macros, charts and other spreadsheet tools to make their 5 a-day garden extract as much data as possible.

Summary

Term 1

Gaming Project

This unit of work covers games programming, they will investigate at the games and consoles available on the market today.

Students will develop their skills in programming further from Year 7 by learning more advanced features of programming such as if statements using software such as Kodu, Scratch and Gamemaker

Term 2

CAD design (Google Sketchup)

This new unit of work covered at Blackfen will teach students Google Sketch up teaching them the ability to create CAD Designs.

Students will have to use data to create 3d models in Google Sketch up and their numeracy ability will be pushed.

Term 3

Crocodile Clips (flowcharts & sequencing)

This unit of work will focus on the flowcharts and sequencing to aid computer programming algorithms.

The algorithms will help teach further data flow within programs and effective programming sequencing.

Term 4

Cryptography (Spreadsheets)

This unit of work focuses on how programming can be used to manipulate data in the form of cryptographs. Students will create their own ciphers and use spreadsheets to crack in the most challenging of codes.

Term 5

Further Programming (GameMaker)

Students will use Game Maker to create even more complex games using programming. These lessons will teach in particular even more object orientated programming code.

Term 6

Computer Architecture

This unit will teach students more about the inner workings of a modern computer. Where data is saved, how information can travel, components that control other components and the specific roles each individual computer component has.

Autumn Term 1

Trends in Computing

This unit will require students to create a presentation or report about a current trend in computing e.g. Bluetooth, Mobile Phones, and Games Consoles etc.

This is Internally assessed and externally moderated by OCR

Autumn term 2

Hardware, Software and logic

This unit looks at the theory of Computer Hardware, Software and Logic.

OCR Set end of item tests, each approx. 15 minutes in duration, to be taken after teaching a topic.

Spring Term 1

Programming Coursework

This unit will require students to complete a coursework using an exam board set task in Scratch.

This is Internally assessed and externally moderated by OCR

Summer Term 1

Graphics Project

This unit will prepare students for the Cambridge nationals at GCSE, they will be required to use Fireworks and Photoshop to create graphics for their chosen client.

Students will be given a business scenario in which they will have to research and design a series of images they will create.

Summer Term 1

Students will use their research and design to start creating and manipulating referenced images together to create a suitable, professional image for the business scenario provided previously.

During this section of the unit the students will test their website from multiple sources and produce an evaluation, evaluating the effectiveness of their image to their target audience.

Creating advertisements for a business
Use of e-mail in a business environment

Designing and creating a spread sheet solution

Students will learn how to create an advertisement for a business scenario using image manipulation software. By the end of term students will also learn professional e-mail etiquette and be able to send e-mails using a variety of tools. This unit of work will provide students the skills to create a spread sheet solution for a given business scenario, students will learn tools such as formula, functions and data validation.

Students will start revision for their end of year 10 ICT exam. This unit of work will teach students how businesses use ICT, what computers, machines and new technologies can be used to do a variety of business needs.

Organising and backing up files and folders

This unit of work teaches students a variety of tools using Database software. Students will use tables, forms, reports and queries to accomplish a variety of business tasks. Students will be given a number of business tasks to complete through this unit of work, creating professional memos, letters, flyers etc. Using all of the files and folders created for the units of work from year 10, they will show how to organise, backup and secure files and folders. This will show the importance of keeping files safe and professional in a business environment.

Students by the end of this unit of work will understand the variety of information and data types that are used in modern businesses. This will cover how information is stored, communicated and kept secure.

This unit of work will show how ICT aids many business working practices, it will teach students how tasks can be accomplished quicker, more secure and much simpler than legacy systems.

Students will be introduced to legal and ethical issues in the use of ICT in the workplace, copyright, data protection act and terms and conditions are all covered.

Student’s final unit of work before their exam will cover how businesses store information and data effectively, and will give a brief introduction into how computers are connected by networks.

This component incorporates and builds on the knowledge and understanding gained in Component 01, encouraging learners to apply this knowledge and understanding using computational thinking.
