Blackfen students attend Royal Navy Battleship Careers Day
Blackfen students aboard the HMS St Albans
Royal Navy Battleship Careers Day at Thames Quay, London
Blackfen School had the rare opportunity of visiting a working battleship, HMS St Albans, for a careers experience event which included taking part in career workshops. The workshops consisted of speed networking with a chance to speak to Navy professionals about the varied career pathways on offer including Hospitality, Medical, Engineering, Science and IT. The HMS St Albans was berthed in London for only two days to celebrate International Women’s Day and highlight career opportunities for women in the Royal Navy. Students enjoyed the tour of the ship and having the chance to see what life is like on a working ship. Students were surprised at how long the crew spend at sea and away from home with one student asking if the ship had Wi-Fi! From the speed networking the students gathered a number of interesting facts such as you can sign up for the Royal Navy at 15 years and nine months, the varied careers available such as a Tailor, a Writer (responsible for on-board expenses) and that there are over 100 roles available! The day ended with all students receiving a Royal Navy gift bag and feeling inspired with the career opportunities available to women.
